Moodle upgrades explained

Questions about upgrading Moodle

Can I upgrade Moodle directly to the latest version?

Only if your current version meets the new version's minimum. Moodle 5.2 and 5.3 need Moodle 4.4 or later, Moodle 5.0 and 5.1 need 4.2.3 or later, and Moodle 4.4 and 4.5 need 4.1.2 or later. Older sites upgrade in several steps.

Which Moodle versions still get security fixes?

As of late 2026: Moodle 4.5 LTS (until October 2027), 5.1 (until April 2027), 5.2 (until October 2027) and 5.3 LTS (until October 2029). Moodle 4.1, 4.4 and 5.0 no longer receive security fixes.

What is an LTS release?

A long-term support release receives security fixes for three years instead of eighteen months. Moodle 4.1, 4.5 and 5.3 are LTS releases, and are the best targets for sites that upgrade rarely.

What changed in Moodle 5.1?

Moodle 5.1 moved its web-accessible files into a /public folder. The web server must point to it, and additional plugins move into it, so hosting settings change during the upgrade.

Do I need to upgrade PHP and the database too?

Usually. Each Moodle version supports a range of PHP versions and a minimum database version. The calculator shows which PHP version to run each step on and the database each step needs.
